One year ago today, on November 30th 2009, Danielle boarded flight US728 and flew to Heathrow to meet me for the first time. We’d been talking for a good long while, and we’d become very close, and we both knew where we wanted it to go and we both thought there was a good chance things would turn out for the best; but in life, of course, there are no guarantees. She did it anyway. One year on, we live together and couldn’t be happier. I love you, D!
To salute her courage in taking a leap of faith that changed both our lives forever, tonight I made her her favourite: macaroni and cheese.
Naturally, being me, I gussied it up a little. It’s a gruyere, cheddar and parmesan sauce of epic richness (hence this tweet), topped with breadcrumbs, and oven roasted in individual Le Creuset ramekins (hat tip to Nick for showing me that these existed). I served it with bacon-wrapped roasted asparagus, lightly steamed tenderstem broccoli tossed in garlic butter, and a pre-made bread topped with cheese and red onion from Marks & Spencer. A little bit of a cheat, but this was a weeknight meal so I had to compromise to the gods of logistics.
I am considering starting a side tumblr dedicated to food — I’ll put the recipe I improvised up on it if I get around to registering the domain name for it this week. Hint: nagging me makes me more likely to get around to this, so if you want to see it, let me know!
