Anandtech on the iPhone 4 signal problems →
The clever clogs at Anandtech have figured out how to make an iPhone 4 report real signal-to-noise ratios and thus brought a much bigger science stick that I did to beat the problem with. Please click through and read it, but I will note they have a number of conclusions that match mine: All three phones tested (iPhone 4, 3GS, and HTC Nexus One) suffer signal attenuation when held. The iPhone 4...

More on the iPhone 4 signal issue
Previously, I did some simple testing of reception strength on my iPhone 4 and concluded that I couldn’t see any problems. I’ve now done some more thorough testing, however, and have reason to think I was wrong. Warning: this is very long and nerdy. UPDATE: read Anandtech’s article, they figured out how to make the iPhone 4 display true signal-to-noise ratios and have thus been...

Bloomberg: Verizon Wireless Said to Start Offering... →
bananacasts: This could be total bunk, but, for the sake of argument, I can think of only two tells. The obvious, unrealized tell: Within the next six months, Verizon rolls out a solution that allows mobile devices to use data and voice simultaneously. The implied tell: Aside from white iPhone 4 manufacturing issues, any supply strains or shipment delays of black iPhone 4s implies that...

Tux Life: Fuck Off, Technology →
bananacasts: That was this morning, after I spent a couple of hours Sunday trying to get my goddamned new wireless printer to print something wirelessly… Printing at home is quite possibly the single remaining broken experience of computing. Enterprise-grade printers — mostly from HP — seem to work consistently and with little fuss. Printing at home is a total nightmare. I opined a few...

I have more iPhone signal nerdery to blog...
…but I have guests tonight so you’ll be spared until tomorrow. I’ve managed to reproduce the signal loss thing, though, even with direct line of sight to a base station. I’m now convinced there is something specifically wrong with the iPhone 4, although how serious it is I’m not sure.

“The designer is therefore the artist of today. Not because he is a genius, but...”
– The above quote is from Bruno Munari, in Design As Art (1966) (and came to me via jasonpermenter). It seems to me that the designer is to the artist as the architect is to the physicist. The former disciplines work with one foot in the theoretical syntax of the latter, whilst keeping the other foot...

Internet Explorer 6 was released on 21st August,...
This means, the day it shipped, the Two Towers were still standing and the iPod hadn’t been released yet. Carry on, wayward web developers who still have to support this antediluvian crap.

On British shoe terminology
kurafire replied to your photo:I long ago stopped doing more than a few second’s… What DO the Brits call them again, anyway? We call most informal shoes “trainers”, whether they are actual training shoes, skate shoes, daps[1] like Converse, even things like fell running shoes. They are all trainers to us. Which is a little perverse, I’ll grant you; but then again...

Y2Gay: the database engineering perspective on... →
To be blunt, the systems aren’t set up to handle it. The paper forms have a space for the husband’s name and a space for the wife’s name. Married people carefully enter their details in block capitals and post the forms off to depressed paper-pushers who then type that information into software front-ends whose forms are laid out and named in precisely the same fashion. And...

Absolutely gorgeous animation by Vimeo user Hexagonall, re-imagining the Lost credits in the minimalist style of Saul Bass (he who did Psycho and North By Northwest, amongst many, many more). Hexagonall has done Tron too.

Commemorative Coins for Utah’s Firing Squad  →
essdogg: <snip> I’m not defending my homestate at all nor am I saying that you believe this way, Richard, but I’ve seen a lot of commentary from death penalty proponents and opponents that focuses on how barbaric the firing squad is as a means of capital punishment. It just seems to me that once you get into state-sponsored death as a cornerstone of your judicial system’s tenets of crime...

Commemorative Coins for Utah’s Firing Squad  →
Utah is the only state in the U.S. that has death by firing squad. Oklahoma allows it only if lethal injection and electrocution are ruled unconstitutional. However, firing squads are used in Afghanistan, Belarus, Ethiopia, Indonesia, North Korea, Somalia, Yemen, and some provinces in China. Stay classy, Utah. You’re in great company.

This is a reserve-on-website, buy-in-store thing. Last time they did this they sold out fast, so if you want 1/3rd off your iTunes spending for a while, hurry up.

“I hear comments sometimes that large oil companies are greedy companies or don’t...”
– BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg (via stevewhitaker) Presumably they care about the small people because they’re the first ones to drown in the rising tide of crude oil?
