Anandtech on the iPhone 4 signal problems →
The clever clogs at Anandtech have figured out how to make an iPhone 4 report real signal-to-noise ratios and thus brought a much bigger science stick that I did to beat the problem with. Please click through and read it, but I will note they have a number of conclusions that match mine:
All three phones tested (iPhone 4, 3GS, and HTC Nexus One) suffer signal attenuation when held.

Previously, I did some simple testing of reception strength on my iPhone 4 and concluded that I couldn’t see any problems. I’ve now done some more thorough testing, however, and have reason to think I was wrong. Warning: this is very long and nerdy.

I have more iPhone signal nerdery to blog...
…but I have guests tonight so you’ll be spared until tomorrow. I’ve managed to reproduce the signal loss thing, though, even with direct line of sight to a base station. I’m now convinced there is something specifically wrong with the iPhone 4, although how serious it is I’m not sure.
